In Esslingen we started off by grabbing some ice cream to distract us from the sweat dripping down our backs in the unexpected German heat. We continued to explore the town by going on Aquino tour where we saw a house that was built in the 1200s. We went into a beautiful church where the guide explained the meaning of "halt die klappe" and how it pertained to weary monks. (When they became tired they often fell asleep knocking over their chairs and creating a loud banding noise the reverberated off the cold stone walls of the church). Following the tour we were granted about an hour of free time where we were able to look around Esslingen. I, being a hungry teenager in a foreign land, stole some fries and bought a crepe. Immediately after the freetime, we hopped back on the bus and made our way back towards our host families.
While some exchange students went to a pool, I was taken by my family to a large castle or fortress in the Swabian Alps. I got to eat even more ice cream and see the city from above in the rose colored sun set or just when the street lights began to switch on. Just when I thought Germany could not be any prettier, I saw it from above, and although it might have been the wind, I was knocked off my feet. Once the sun dipped nearly out of sight, we made our way back to the car where we sang the whole way home. the previous sentence has zero figurative language, we literally sang the whole way back, but the night was not finished before we sang Tage Wie Diese before finally leaving the car and feeling like we had just created our own hallmark movie ending.
This trip has continued to amaze me, and although everyday I wonder if it could get any better than this, it always has. I can't wait to see what memories tomorrow brings, and I can't wait to, of course, buy my weight in chocolate.
